"Reel Earth is fire! It’s educational, fun, smart--and we should have it everywhere."
-- Crayola, Reel Earth, New Orleans
In 2008 Remedee launched the pilot for its Reel Earth program in New Orleans, Louisiana. In collaboration with local organizational partners, including Upward Bound, the Make it Right Foundation, Katrina’s Children and the Lower 9th Ward Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development, top students were identified from underserved communities in New Orleans to make short documentary films that connect an environmental issue of their choice to their own lives and communities.
During a three-day kick-off retreat in nearby Fairhope, Alabama, students worked with filmmaker mentors and environmentalists to lay the groundwork for their documentary film projects.
Over the course of the summer, with guidance from their mentors, six groups of one to three students produced, shot, and edited their environmental films.
On November 1, 2008, the films were screened at a citywide green carpet event. A jury of top filmmakers, environmentalists and community activists selected winners of both the film competition in the categories of "best advocacy film" and "best personal film."
