"It was a great experience working with the camera, I'd never done that before and it was also cool to work with adults on the documentary. I learned how to operate the camera and interview people."

In the Classroom first launched in 2008 at Los Angeles Academy Middle School in South Los Angeles, an underperforming public school with subject proficiency levels in the single-digit percentiles. The participating class — comprised of 24-tech savvy and artistically-minded 7th and 8th graders — took part in the ten-week-long program, during which filmmakers taught a hands-on media literacy and filmmaking workshop in the classroom every day throughout the length of the program. The curriculum subjects ranged from media literacy to storytelling techniques to production and post-production to community and environmental issues. Guest educators taught special sessions covering numerous socially-relevant arenas.
